Beneath the glass marquee, chandeliers and rings of foliage hovered above round and long tables dressed in pale blue, with white cross-back chairs. The centrepieces mixed pink and fuchsia roses, lavender, orchids and eucalyptus beside candles in glass holders; each place had a plate on a beaded charger, a lilac patterned napkin and a menu.

Across the garden stood a fountain at the entrance, a yellow velvet sofa facing a white fireplace, blue armchairs with a sideboard and mirror, a buffet on slatted tables and a strawberry cake between golden arches. As the day ended, a curtain of lights fell from a tree onto candles set out on the lawn.
